was not a virgin; then he could write her a bill of divorcement. She had deceived her husband by not being what she claimed to be. He had been “taken in” by her. Naturally, this would lead to trouble in the home, and lead to fighting later on. By the time of the New Testament, the interpretation of “uncleanness” had become so broad that if a wife even burned the biscuits, that would be grounds for divorce. When Jesus was asked the question, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?”
